The Roles of a Caregiver: Emotional, Physical and Liaison

When a loved one has cancer, the caregiver is the person who knows most about what’s occurring with the cancer patient’s treatment and recovery. They coordinate the patient’s care and serve as the primary communicator to family, friends and health care teams – all while trying to help their loved one adapt to their new way of life. A few weeks into school, I was having some minor back pain and aches and decided to go to the chiropractor, Dr. Alex Smith. During my visit, he recommended that I have an MRI of my back to make sure before doing a lot of adjusting that there was nothing majorly wrong. I agreed to have one, as a precautionary measure. After several days, I received an unexpected text from him asking me if I could run by after work. Dr. Smith is a great supporter of our schools and students, so I thought nothing of him asking me to run by. Franklin County Resident and ACS Volunteer Shares Battle with Ovarian Cancer

In the spring of 2011, I was learning to love life again. Recently I had gotten out of a bad long-term relationship. It had been several years since I had been to the OBGYN (shame on me) and finally made an appointment. I was at that appointment that my world began to unravel. He asked if I was pregnant (uh, nope I’m sure I’m not) and then decided to do an ultrasound. A few days later, he called me to come to his office for results of blood work. My friend Denise wouldn’t let me leave work to go alone so she was with me when he broke the news that it could possibly be ovarian cancer.
