The number of prostate cancer diagnoses are increasing, after decades of decline. We have an opportunity to improve outcomes for all men with prostate cancer, and especially for Black men who carry the disproportionate burden of prostate cancer occurrences in the U.S. and have the highest documented prostate cancer rate in the world.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) and our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), are uniquely positioned to address these alarming disparities through our new IMPACT initiative – Improving Mortality from Prostate Cancer Together.
We must address these shifts in prostate cancer, especially in the Black community, since the incidence of prostate cancer in Black men is 70% higher than in White men. IMPACT will fund bold new cancer research programs that connect the laboratory, the clinic, and the community.
With IMPACT, we are committed to using every facet of our organization to improve outcomes for all and reverse disparities for Black men:
Health equity is embedded in our mission and eliminating disparities is at the forefront of our work. Through IMPACT, we are reaffirming our commitment to eliminating barriers and addressing needs to ensure everyone has the same opportunity to be healthy and cancer-free.
